Brett Murdock is fighting an amazing grassroots battle in California’s 39th congressional district. I’ve diaried this race here and here. The district has shifted significantly to the Democrats in 2016 with just 3% fewer registered Democrats than Republicans. Ed Royce is spending millions on TV ads and direct mail, while Murdock is running a very bare-bones campaign with no outside funding, superPACs or even much DCCC support. There is no money in the campaign to pay for a poll, but it is likely Murdock is within 5 points of Royce while being outspent 100-to-1. It would be tragic if Murdock ends up losing by 5 when just a modestly-funded campaign could flip a seat. Ed Royce is basically mailing it in, betting that his past margins will hold without him having to work for it. He is way past his sell-by date.
The League of Women Voters announced a debate between the candidates in CA-39, but Ed Royce claimed he was unavailable. Check out the video ad from the Murdock campaign, which has already gotten 10,000 views in a district of 240,000 voters.
Does anyone know of a polling outfit that could do a simple poll to gather some data on this race and help make a case for some big players to invest in it? Anyone?
